Tunisia takes part in Euro-Mediterranean ministerial conference on information society
TUNIS - Minister of communication technologies El Hadj Gley led the Tunisian delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean ministerial conference on the information society in the Euro-Mediterranean countries, held on February 26-27 in Cairo (Egypt).
This event, which lies within the framework of the Barcelona Process, is held by the European Commission under the motto: " Creation of Favourable Environment to the Euro-Mediterranean Information Society."
The conference examined programmes and investments in matters of developing information and communication technologies (ICTs)' networks, as part of the implementation of decisions and recommendations issued from the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS-Tunis 2005).
On the occasion, the minister expressed Tunisia's will under president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali's leadership, to exert further efforts with the sisterly and friendly countries to consolidate partnership in order to materialise the WSIS' recommendations, the Tunis Commitment's content and the Tunis Agenda on the information society which pave the way for narrowing the digital divide and for fostering development among nations.
Works of the conference resulted in the ministerial declaration in which participants called to take into consideration the various decisions taken in the World Summit on the Information Society, aimed to guarantee social-economic development and co-operation between the Euro-Mediterranean countries in the fields of connection to the communication networks, digital contents and e-administration.
On the sidelines of the conference, Mr. Gley held several working sessions with his counterparts of Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Portugal and Slovenia, as well as with representatives of the European Commission and the private sector.
Talks examined prospects to co-operation and partnership in the ICTs field.
