Tunisia celebrates today national and international environment day

Tunisia is celebrating today national and international environment day whose theme, chosen by the united nations environment program (UNEP) is this year : « your planet needs you - United against climate change ».

Aware of the challenges arising from climate change and its impact on natural resources, ecosystems and economic activities, Tunisia has been one of the first countries to adopt the UN convention on climate change.

Tunisia has therefore worked out strategies and general guidelines to reduce the impact of climate change.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has also called, at the Lisbon summit on « energy and climate change » in December 2007 for a long-term partnership between Africa and Europe aimed to help African developing countries to rationalize the use of renewable energies that preserve the environment.

Besides, in November 2007, Tunisia hosted a conference on international solidarity on the strategies of fight against climate change in Africa and in the Mediterranean. That conference had adopted the Tunis Declaration and Plan of Action to support international solidarity to fight against climate change in African and Mediterranean states, the final aim being to establish the bases of joint action , preserve life on earth and secure the bases of comprehensive and sustainable development for all peoples in the world.

Tunisia is contributing to consecrate the principles of the first earth summit of Rio De Janeiro and the 2nd summit of Johannesburg.
