Third Mediterranean conference on turtle protection

HAMMAMET, October 20, 2008 (TAP) - Works of the 3rd Mediterranean conference on protection of turtles were opened, on Monday in southern city of Hammamet, by environment and comprehensive development minister Nadhir Hamada. This four-day conference is organised by the Sea Sciences and Technologies Institute (INSTM) and the Regional Centre for Specially Protected Areas, within the framework of the Barcelona Convention, the Bonn Convention on the Preservation of Migratory Species and Bern Convention on Europe's natural habitats. The Conference, attended by 100 experts from the Mediterranean countries and others involved in the preservation of turtles, aims at updating the strategy of turtle protection in light of the findings made new researches conducted during the last three years, exchanging successful experiences in matters of protecting turtles and endangered species and discussing the findings of the researches achieved as part of the action plan to protect turtles in the Mediterranean from pollution, the effects of climate change and economic activities which were launched ten years ago, and to reinforce protected areas in the Mediterranean, such as Tunisia's Kuriat Islands. ...
