King chairs signing ceremony of urban development program northeast

Jerada - King Mohammed VI on Wednesday chaired a signing ceremony of an agreement on the 2008/2011 program of urban development of the urban communes of Jerada and Bni Maathar for a sum amounting to USD 50.2Mn.

    The program is meant to provide the population of Jerada, estimated at 58,000 people, with the necessary infrastructure and equipment, improve the cityscape in the main centers and the life conditions of citizens, and highlight and protect the environment against the impacts of mining discharge in the two communes.

    It also aims to solve the urban problems in the two cities, notably the deterioration of the urban fabric, the lack of basic infrastructure, the proliferation of under-equipped housing, and the environmental damage caused by mining.

    The king also enquired about a project to redevelop 27 under-equipped neighborhoods in Jerada, Bni Mathar and Touissit for a cost of USD 12.2Mn. This project will benefit 7,800 people.

    The monarch also inaugurated an indoor sports hall, which was carried out for a sum totaling USD 826k. The 1500-sqm-facility includes, notably a playground, a stadium of 500 seats, an infirmary, and two refreshment areas.

    In the same day, the king inaugurated a 5,800-square-meter mosque, which required about USD 999K. The mosque will host up to 1,800 people and will include two prayer rooms, a library, a Koranic school , and a library.
