Rabat - The number of blood donors in Morocco does not exceed 1% of the overall population, while the World Health Organization (WHO) requires a 5% rate, director of Rabat blood transfusion center, Hassan Belekbir, revealed.

Some 172,000 people gave their blood in Morocco in 2007, i.e. a 3¨% increase compared to 2006, with the highest percentage recorded in the regional blood transfusion center of Casablanca with 49,000 donors, followed by the Rabat center (over 41,000 donors), while the rest is shared out among the 16 Moroccan blood transfusion centers, he added.

The objective in 2008, he said, is to achieve a 20% increase of the number of donors and reach some 52,000 donors in the blood transfusion center in Rabat.

According to statistics, a single donor can save the life of four people.

People aged 18-60 can give 400ml of blood every 56 days, i.e. 7% of their blood mass, without any health risks.
