El Jadida - Morocco's propane gas consumption is currently around 2 million tonnes per year, Minister of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment Amina Benkhadra said on Wednesday in El Jadida (190km south of Rabat)The consumption of propane gas in Morocco has increased by 6% per year mainly because of the use of gas in rural areas, Benkhadra said at the inauguration of propane gas storage and receiving terminal in the Jorf Lasfar port (El Jadida province).
The site, which is the largest surface storage terminal in the North African country, will be equipped with a pipeline of 12 kilometers.
Propane and butane gas are ranked third in Morocco in terms of hydrocarbon consumption, that is 21% (compared to 15% ten years ago), she added.
By 2015, gas consumption will be around 2.7 million tonnes, Benkhadra said, adding that imports will increase by 35% and the number of butane cylinders will reach 46 million units from 34 million units currently.
The minister also visited the butane gas terminal site, which will be operational by September 2011.
The two terminals, which span over an area of 5 hectares, have a capacity of 2,600 tonnes for propane gas and 14,800 tonnes for butane gas.
