Moroc Telecom's turnover up 10% in 2008 H1

Rabat - Morocco's telephony operator, Maroc Telecom, achieved a MAD 14.3 bln consolidated turnover during the fist half of 2008, that is a 10% increase compared with the same period of the previous year, a press release of the company said on Tuesday.

    This performance is mainly due to the continuing growth of mobile activities both in Morocco and abroad in the subsidiaries, said the company, noting that the group's sales rose by 8.2 %.

    The group's activities in Morocco achieved, by the end of June, a gross turnover exceeding MAD 12.5 bln, i.e. a 9.8% increase against the same period of last year.

    Maroc Telecom's mobile sales in Morocco, the company went on, posted a 12.9 % increase to stand at MAD 8.9 bln, thanks to an increase of the mobile customers base which rose by 21.3% to reach 14.2 million at the end of June 2008.

    As to fixed-line and internet sales, they went up 0.5 % to stand at MAD 4.75 bln, while the consumer base increased by 3% for the landline and 10% for ADSL internet and 3G+ services.

   Outside Morocco, Onatel in Burkina Faso achieved a MAD 715 mln gross turnover (+6%) during the first half of 2008, while Gabon Telecom posted a gross turnover of MAD 529 mln, i.e a 18.5% decrease compared with the same period in 2007, the same source concluded.
