Continued acts of detention in Mauritania

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

The police in Mauritania continued acts of detentions which targeted almost 18 members of the Islamic trend, in addition to several unidentified persons, according to sources close to the Islamists.

On top of the list of the detainees is Sheikh Muhammad al-Hassan Weld al-Dadou, who is known as the godfather for the Islamic movement, and the former ambassador al-Mukhtar Weld Muhammad Mousa and lawyer Muhammad Weld Ahmad Weld al-Haj Seidi.

The acts of detention targeted the trend close to Muslim Brothers but included trends described as Salafeyah, including Abdullah Weld Amin and Muhammad Sedya known as "Nawawi." However, several persons are still being chased including the political activist Muhammad Jamil Weld Mansour, deputy chairman of the Democratic Forum Party.

One and a half months ago the Mauritanian authorities released the leaders of the Islamic trends in a step for easing down tensions. But the new wave of detention raises more than one question on the implications of the political and security situation in Mauritania which is described by some observers as "intensified."
