Angola to appoint new head coach of national basketball team

Luis Magalhaes, native of Portugal, will be appointed new head coach of Angola's national basketball team, a senior sports official said here Tuesday.

LUANDA - Luis Magalhaes, native of Portugal, will be appointed new head coach of Angola's national basketball team, a senior sports official said here Tuesday.

    At a news briefing on Tuesday evening, Gustavo da Conceicao, head of Angola sport governing body,

    told reporters that the appointment of the new head coach of the national squad and African champions "August 1st" is to win the Tenth African

    Cup in Afrobasket2009 to be held in Libya from August 5 to 15.

    Magalhaes replaces Alberto de Carvalho "Ginguba" who led the national basketball squad to

    win the Ninth African Basketball Championships and ranked ninth place in the last World Cup.

    The Angolan men's basketball team is regarded the best team in Africa having won eight titles out of nine African basketball championships since

    its first appearance in 1980.
