TUNIS - A seminar on the Tunisian strategy in matters of preservation of air quality " from the curative to the preventive," was held, on Thursday in Tunis, by the National Agency for Environment Protection (ANPE). The event is aimed at enhancing the national system set up for the protection of the quality of air.

The Tunisian strategy in matters of fight against air pollution is focused on three major axes namely the protection and rational management of natural resources, the fight against pollution and the promotion of the quality of air.

Opening the event's works, minister of environment and sustainable development Nadhir Hamada highlighted the efforts exerted by Tunisia in matters of fight against pollution, notably the setting up of the law on the quality of air in 2007.

This law, underlines the minister, contains several provisions providing notably for the setting up of a national system for the follow-up of the quality of air in cities and urban agglomerations and setting criteria for preparing programmes on the preservation of the quality of air in urban agglomerations.

With regard to international co-operation in matters of environment protection and exchange of expertise, the minister reminded that Tunisia had signed a co-operation agreement with South Korea in April 2008, in addition to its adhesion to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances Depleting the Ozone Layer.

Mr. Hamada reminded that the setting up of a unit specialised in the protection of Ozone layer within ANPE, in association with several international and regional structures helped carry out 44 projects with investments worth 9.84 million dollars.
