ALGIERS - Two armed terrorists have been killed by Algerian security forces in the mountains of Ouacif in the eastern province of Tizi-Ouzou, the state APS news agency reported Sunday. The two terrorists were killed on Friday and another arrested, said Minister of State of the Interior and Local Communities Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni in Algiers on Sunday.
"The operations of the security forces in the mountains of Ouacif are still ongoing," he said, without giving the affiliation of the terrorists.
As for the anti-terrorist maneuver, Zerhouni said some terror groups" are still in activity, but they tend to leave their bases to head for the eastern and western part of the country under the pressure of the government army and other security forces.
"The increase of terrorist attacks does not mean the deterioration of the situation...instead, we really believe that these terrorist groups are now in a difficult position," Zerhouni added.
However, Zerhouni said "we can not ignore the possibility that they may carry out some attacks, especially during the presidential election."
Algeria's presidential election, which involves the incumbent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and five other candidates, is expected to be held on April 9.
