Algerian escalation over convening the Arab Summit in Egypt
The Algerian foreign ministry announced on Sunday that Algeria might take part in its capacity as a member state, rather than as the current president for the Arab League, in the proposed Cairo Arab summit.
The ministry explained that Algeria finds, in principle that there is no barrier to convening the summit, though it is not responsible for dispatching invitations in its capacity as a current president for the Arab league.
The Algerian ministry added that the only consultation in this file happened between Algeria, Egypt and the Arab League over a mini summit bringing together Iraq's neighboring states and also Palestine. Algeria has not yet announced the level of its representation to this urgent summit.
The Arab league had extended invitations to this summit at a proposal by the Egyptian President last week in order to discuss the current Arab conditions. The Egyptian president also called for convening this summit in Sharm el-Sheik, in a remark that the Egyptian authorities were not deterred by the recent attacks in Sharm el-Sheik which resulted in killing 88 persons.
Meantime, Chinese CCTV reported that the summit, scheduled for early this week, will be delayed as a result of the death of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Bin Abdul al-Aziz.
